LRWA appoints a new chairman and vice chairman
The Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) has appointed a new chairman – Stuart Hicks, UK marketing manager at Kemper System, and vice chairman – Mark Flello, managing director of Dove Technology.
Stuart and Mark, who were put forward for each of their positions by the LRWA board, were then voted-in by members at the LRWA AGM in March 2019.
Stuart has been proactively involved within the LRWA since joining the marketing committee eight years ago. With more than 25 years’ marketing experience, he led new initiatives such as the redevelopment and launch of the LRWA website, and spearheaded the production of the digital video members pack and corporate video as marketing chair.
He was appointed as a board member in March 2018, where he provided valuable support to the association during meetings and events, including the planning of the LRWA Awards & Gala which is now in its third year.
As chair, Stuart will help guide the delivery of significant new projects and sector developments with the support of the LRWA board, its members and the CEO and driving force of the association, Sarah Spink, to continue to help raise the standards and awareness of the liquid roofing and waterproofing industry.

Sarah Wigglesworth Architects extend Kingsgate Primary School through creative collaboration
Sarah Wigglesworth Architects (SWA), working with Architects Collaborative, has designed a modern extension to the existing Victorian buildings of Kingsgate Primary School, creating a playful and light filled addition to this London school. The new space includes a multi-purpose studio, library and community entrance with accessible WC and storage.
“Working with Ann Griffin of Architects Collaborative has proven how, when it comes to education projects that have forward-thinking clients such as Camden Council, collaboration produces astonishing results,” says Sarah Wigglesworth. “Architects Collaborative, acting for LB Camden, was instrumental in initiating the project, developing the brief and a site wide masterplan while the SWA team designed the buildings and managed the process of delivery. We are all proud of the result, which offers a wonderful new learning environment for the pupils and staff at Kingsgate.”
“This is creative collaboration at its best – where the process is enriched and the outcome exceeds what any individual member could have achieved without the shared endeavour,” said Ann Griffin. “It has been particularly rewarding to see these delightful spaces in use and to hear from the school how they support a seamless transition for pupils moving up from their other site.”

The London Borough of Camden, one of the city’s councils most committed to education and design excellence, selected Kingsgate Primary School for expansion to help meet the need for more pupil places in this relatively deprived part of the borough.

Horsham primary school wins £500 towards playground project
Trafalgar Community Infant School in Horsham has received £500 funding after winning a local community fund campaign run by the Kingsfold based builders’ merchant NYEs Building Supplies.
Proud to be Local, which was set up by NYEs in 2018, offers community groups, charities and causes the chance to receive £500 funding towards a project of their choice. The initiative is run four times during the year and anyone is able to put forward a nomination. Nominations are shortlisted to three finalists that go head to head in a public vote to determine the winner. Votes can be cast by email, on Facebook and at the NYEs depot.
Karen McGinnis, whose son attends the school, is a member of the fundraising group The Friends of Trafalgar School. Karen made the nomination to NYEs in January as part of the group’s aim to raise £40,000 towards playground equipment.
Alys Ransom, who is Chair of The Friends of Trafalgar School, said:
“This is a marvellous campaign and we cannot thank NYEs enough. Schools are facing an extremely challenging time so this money is very gratefully received and will go a long way to helping us obtain our target of £40,000.

David Treharne, Senior Engineer at Domus Ventilation, looks at how improvements in the energy efficiency of dwellings has led to poor indoor air quality, and why mechanical ventilation is the way forward.
Over recent years we’ve done a good job of improving the energy efficiency of new build homes, with a focus on sealing the building envelope to prevent wasteful heat leakage. And it’s worked remarkably well; so much so, that we’ve created air tight homes that, in some circumstances, over heat and trap the stale, humid air indoors along with the pollutants. You see, what we’ve failed to do is match the improvement in energy efficiency with the provision of ventilation.
The Results of Poor Ventilation
As well as making for an uncomfortable home environment, poor ventilation can directly affect the health of residents. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) has known links to allergies, asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease and even dementia. Research conducted by the University of Exeter Medical School amongst social housing in Cornwall found that for every increase in SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) ratings – which is used to measure the energy efficiency of dwellings – there was a 2% increased risk of asthma.

The new substation is located near Immingham in North East Lincolnshire and has been constructed for Ørsted A/S Energy with Balfour Beatty the principal contractor on the project.

UKGBC releases Social Value guidance for local authorities
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has today released its latest guidance document, detailing how local authorities can help ensure that new construction and property development in their area positively impacts people and communities by delivering social value.
‘Driving social value in new development: Options for local authorities’ is a comprehensive set of recommendations for local authorities, based on research and consultation with local government, businesses and not-for-profit experts. It is a detailed exploration of the policy mechanisms that can be used by local authorities to specify and ensure social value outcomes. Such outcomes include jobs and economic growth, health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability and strength of community.
John Alker, Director of Policy and Places at UKGBC said: “Ever since Government introduced the Social Value Act a few years ago, this topic has been rising up the agenda of both local authorities and private sector. However, there is still a long way to go before we fully grasp the opportunities presented by the concept, particularly in relation to development and regeneration.
“With the acute funding pressures faced by local authorities, as well as the growing interest in social impact investing and socially responsible business, there are strong drivers for public and private sector to work together to maximise the benefits from new development to local communities.”
The guidance covers the use of social value requirements in:
- Local government procurement that relates to new development
- Local planning policy
- The disposal of local authority land
The document is available in UKGBC’s popular presentation resource format which allows local authorities to easily incorporate the organisation’s research into their own material.

Mitsubishi Electric has completed its line-up of R32 M Series wall mounted air conditioning systems, with the launch of the new MSZ-EF R32 Zen system. Combining energy efficiency with a sophisticated, streamlined design, the new unit adds to the already extensive M Series range, with all products in the range now using the lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerant, R32.
Created to complement modern interiors with a compact and stylish design, the unit comes in three colour variations (Black, Silver and White) to blend seamlessly into any environment it’s placed in. The range also includes Wi-Fi capabilities, giving the user the flexibility to control and monitor the unit using a smartphone, tablet or PC via the MELCloud app.

What does sustainability mean in architecture?
From Hybrid air conditioning to the emergence of ‘plyscrapers’, Ellina Webb looks into sustainability in architecture and the built environment.
Sustainable, sustainably and sustainability are three buzzwords that I’ve heard more and more over the past few years. Is this business model sustainable? Do you shop sustainably? Does your organisation have sustainability at the forefront of their minds?
In so many situations, from micro to macro, we throw the ‘Sustain’ term into conversation to emphasis whether or not the strategy, the building, the lifestyle or the mind-set considers a vast array of factors.
In actual fact there seems to be many different ideas regarding what the three S’s encompass, for example, does it connect with the environment; does it consider economic, social cultural, technological and political factors? Does it meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future?
Just take a look at the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations in 2015…
When it comes to design, development and construction in the built environment however, these buzzwords are becoming increasingly important, so with all this in mind, I’m going to look at what the S’s specifically mean in this industry.

KEMPEROL 2K-PUR stands the test of time
A liquid roofing and waterproofing system, which was the first of its kind to be launched in the UK, has turned 20.
KEMPEROL 2K-PUR, which is manufactured by Kemper System, has retained its unique market position over the last two decades. It remains the only cold liquid-applied wet-on-wet waterproofing product in the UK which is sustainably sourced, solvent-free and completely odourless.
Manufactured using an 80 per cent castor-oil formula derived from sustainable sources, the liquid system bonds directly to the substrate forming a seamless, elastomeric waterproof membrane that cannot delaminate and is UV stable.
Stuart Hicks from Kemper System said: “The 20th anniversary of Kemperol 2K-PUR is a major milestone and demonstrates our forward-thinking commitment to innovation, quality and sustainability.
“The system has stood the test of time with a proven 20-year track record and continues to be one of the most popular and sought-after systems for all sorts of projects. Its unique qualities make it ideal for waterproofing buildings where environmental considerations are a priority or for occupied properties when the work has to be carried out without disruption from strong odours.”

No more noisy neighbours!
In December 2018 Sound Reduction Systems (SRS) were approached by the Sovini Group to help solve an ongoing issue that had arisen between tenants.
Sovini Group is a housing association based in Merseyside. They had been receiving multiple noise complaints from tenants of a semi-detached residential property in Southport.
The tenants were struggling with a noisy neighbour and Sovini Group were called upon to block the passage of sound between one semi-detached property to the other.
They approached Floorscan Acoustics Ltd, a distributor of Sound Reduction System products and systems, who immediately undertook acoustic tests in the property.
Floorscan specified the use of a wall lining system called Maxiboard, to be installed in the adjoining rooms such as the lounge, study area and bedroom.
Maxiboard is an extremely high performance and versatile soundproofing board designed to be used much like plasterboard. It can be installed directly onto timber studwork, masonry or existing plaster. Maxiboard can be used to Meet Part E of the Building Regulations or just to improve comfort in a domestic situation, such as noisy neighbours.

A window into the future – consumers demand large, energy efficient windows with noise reduction features
New research has revealed the window design and features that consumers hope to see in their future homes, with 52% of consumers saying that they would like to see windows with higher energy efficiency levels. 29% would like windows that have the ability to shade against sunlight, 26% would like to see increased use of sustainable materials and 23% of consumers identifying large floor-to-ceiling windows as their most appealing design trend.
In addition to this, 29% of consumers said that smart windows, for example windows that can block the sun, turn into a mirror, or be used as a smart screen, are also desirable, according to research conducted by Eurocell plc, the UK’s leading manufacturer, recycler and distributor of PVC-U window, door, conservatory and roofline systems.
Architects at leading studios Hawkins Brown, SimpsonHaugh and BDP, as well as property developer The High Street Group, analysed these consumer views of the windows of the future, providing expert insight.
When talking about the future of windows, and what we can expect, Francesca Roberts, Hawkins Brown, commented: “It’s about careful placement of the windows and thinking about how light can be flooded into properties in all the right places.

Fettle unveils The Draycott, a European-inspired brasserie in LA’s Sunset Boulevard
Fettle, the LA and London based design studio has designed The Draycott, a European-inspired brasserie with a Californian twist situated in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. The flagship restaurant, by acclaimed restaurateurs Matt and Marisa Hermer, evokes a sense of nostalgia of a grand European brasserie balanced with the flair of its Californian location.
The Draycott is an exercise on bespoke design and all of the furniture in the restaurant has been meticulously custom designed by Fettle. Signature Fettle designs include a marble-topped jewel-box like bar in the heart the space with other elements of the dining room symmetrically positioned to create a strong sense of uniformity and organisation. The bespoke dining chair used throughout the space is a stand out piece in the restaurant and takes inspiration from a traditional brasserie chair but is upholstered in a rich tan leather with an added arm pad, studwork, timber leg and arm details. Other design features include the ornate ceiling, the bespoke marble mosaic floor on the outdoor terrace and the dramatic patinated brass back bar.
Fettle used a fresh yet bold colour palette to create a Californian ambience throughout the space including a coral-coloured coffered pink ceiling with detailed cornice-work that sits alongside striking leather upholstery in mustard and rich green.

JHC Adds Bushboard Vista to Showroom Displays
Northern Ireland’s JHC Hardware has become the latest of over 500 stockists nationwide to stock Bushboard’s latest innovation; Vista statement splashbacks and using the products to create striking new displays for the showroom in Belfast.
JHC Hardware, a well-known family owned company has been established for over 55 years in Belfast Northern Ireland and employs over 50 staff. Operating from a huge 70,000 sq ft facility, with its own delivery fleet, JHC specialises in kitchen and bathroom furniture, worksurfaces and components to both kitchen, bedroom and bathroom manufacturers as well as the fitting trades and consumers.
Nigel Machin, National Distribution Sales Manager says “Having JHC on board is a real boost in Northern Ireland. The company has worked with Bushboard for many years offering worksurfaces, splashbacks and upstands from our other ranges. Giving their customers access to Vista statement splashbacks and displaying the range so strongly is exciting.”
Bushboard’s Vista 9mm statement splashbacks like the Casablanca Grey shown above in one of the new JHC Displays, is available along with Moorish patterns, geometrics, weathered London brick, metro tiling. Summer Palms and vintage prints. The new collection includes 14 designs in 9mm mdf and six in 4mm acrylic.

Learning To Breathe… New Domus Ventilation CPD Course for New Build Sector
Domus Ventilation, part of the Polypipe group, has announced a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited course on”Residential Ventilation Principles and Best Practice“.
The CIBSE accredited course from Domus Ventilation focuses on the importance of ventilation in the residential new build industry, in line with Part F of the Building Regulations. The aim of the short course is to clearly explain why ventilation is so important, not only for the health of the occupant but also for the fabric of the building.
Topics covered include why ventilation is necessary; the types of ventilation available, along with supporting ductwork and installation practices; and the pertinent regulations / directives. Participants will come away with an understanding of what needs to be considered when specifying a ventilation system at the appropriate project stage.
The new “Residential Ventilation Principles and Best Practice” CPD accredited course has been written by Shane Leather, Domus Ventilations’ recently appointed National Specification Sales Manager. Shane has enjoyed 23 years’ experience working across the breadth of the HVAC sector, making his knowledge and expertise invaluable.
Shane’s appointment to this post and the new CPD course forms part of Domus Ventilation’s well structured strategy to return to the specification sector following the launch of a range of high performance mechanical ventilation systems over the past year.

The dangers of wrongly installed eyebolts
On buildings where access is regularly required using a harness, installing eyebolts such as the Kee i-Bolt range to attach a harness line to is worth considering to make work safer and more efficient.
Safety eyebolts are ideal for single working persons, reducing the risk of a fall whilst carrying out external window cleaning and general maintenance. Eyebolts offer effective fall arrest protection for those carrying out high level window, façade cleaning or other building maintenance operations from an ‘open window’ position.
Whilst eyebolts can be hugely beneficial and very safe when used properly, we come across too many systems which have been improperly installed, putting lives at risk should they be used.
Eyebolts should be positioned so that the operative can attach their lanyard and safety harness before being at risk, ensuring safe access and personal protection in the event of an accidental slip or fall.
The image above is a perfect example of an incorrect and possibly dangerous eyebolt installation. The manager responsible for this building said they had been assured the system had passed a 6kN pull test, and assumed this meant it was safe to use. This is wrong, and could have ended very badly had it not been discovered.
