Construction and property business leaders dominate list of heavyweight firms calling for net zero carbon UK by 2050

Construction and property business leaders dominate list of heavyweight firms calling for net zero carbon UK by 2050

More than 120 prominent business leaders have written to the Prime Minister urging the Government to adopt the Committee on Climate Change’s (CCC) recommendation for a UK 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target. A third of the signatories are UKGBC members, reflecting a strong appetite for climate action from the construction and property sector.

The letter has been coordinated by The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group in conjunction with business networks including UKGBC, The CBI, Aldersgate Group and IIGCC. The letter was profiled in the Financial Times and is available here.

Julie Hirigoyen, chief executive at UKGBC said:

“The writing is on the wall for business and policymakers alike: the time for climate action is now. This letter demonstrates that the climate crisis is rising to the top of boardroom agendas by the sheer number of business heavyweights calling for Government to legislate for a net zero carbon UK. No doubt many of these leaders recognise the growing opportunities of transforming their businesses for a net zero carbon economy. Given that the built environment contributes around 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint, this is particularly true of the construction and property industry, so we’re delighted to see so many of our members as signatories on this letter.”

UKGBC member signatories to the letter:

  • Allies and Morrison
  • Argent (Property Development) Services LLP
  • Arup
  • Atelier Ten
  • Avison Young

Bathroom Bliss

Bushboard Launch New Designer Collection Decors and add Arcylic into Nuance Bathroom Panelling Collection

Bushboard’s patented and award-winning Nuance bathroom wall panels have been a well-deserved success for the company – and now the range is even better with the addition of an exciting new Designer Collection comprising eight new decors and at the sametime, seven new stylish, glossy acrylics panels. Stand out designs include an impeccably book-matched marble. All the new designs are shown in an inspiring brochure packed with ideas.

Acrylic Nuance

Marble is a time-honoured material for bathrooms. Much loved by Victorian and Edwardian sanitary pioneers, this handsome stone is beautiful but hard to work with.

The fabulous marble slab designs from Nuance, in the new acrylic collection, reflect the natural beauty of authentic marble without the time-consuming cutting and installation problems.

New décor highlight; Cararra Marble Slab, when panels are placed side by side, like the pages of an open book, the panels are mirror images.

The contrasting veining matches to create one stunning, unbroken pattern. This offers a strong, large-scale symmetrical look which creates maximum visual impact without a high-end price tag or any offsite cutting or the time or mess of ceramic tiling.

Carbon Monoxide – Are you covered?

Carbon Monoxide – Are you covered?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is otherwise known as the silent killer. This is because it is a gas that you cannot see, smell or taste. So this begs the question, how do you know if you have a CO leak?

Finding a CO leak

Due CO being almost impossible to spot, the only way to tell that you have a CO leak is by having a working CO Alarm fitted. Carbon Monoxide standards are taken from BS EN 50292:2002, within which it states that ideally, an alarm should be installed in every room containing a fuel-burning appliance and additional alarms should be installed to ensure that adequate warning is given for occupant in other rooms.

As the image shows, you should:

  • Locate an alarm on the ceiling where the the appliance is in the room, as seen in the kitchen.
  • Site an alarm on the wall, at breathing height, in a bedroom where an enclosed flue runs through the room. You site this on the wall because the alarm needs to wake you when CO is at breathing height, which would be bedhead height whilst asleep.
  • Site an alarm in the living room as it has a fire place, as well as the rooms above that the flue will run through.

There is no excuse for inaction or ignorance on air pollution

There is no excuse for inaction or ignorance on air pollution

The British Safety Council, alarmed by new research, welcomes the #AirWeShare campaign in calling for urgent action on protecting outdoor workers from air pollution.

The site engineer at a construction site had air pollution exposure levels six times higher than that of the office worker.

Of all the trial participants, the lorry driver had the highest overall exposure.

Air pollution on the tube is high. The deeper lines are much more polluted than those closer to the surface, with overground lines being ten times cleaner.

Source: Hubbub trial monitoring air pollution exposure of people working or living in London

These are the top-line findings of the trial conducted by the environmental charity Hubbub in cooperation with King’s College London and The Times. The trial was set up to examine how air pollution affects people living and working in London and what can be done to minimise people’s exposure. There were ten participants with varying lifestyles and occupations who used portable monitors that tracked their air pollution exposure levels for a week. Among them were outdoor workers, i.e. an HGV driver, a construction site engineer and a construction worker.

Vivalda calls for prudence on cladding specification and testing

Vivalda calls for prudence on cladding specification and testing

Vivalda Group’s founder and chairman, Peter Johnson, has urged contractors and architects to tread carefully in the wake of James Brokenshire’s recent announcement to fund the recladding of 166 privately owned, high rise buildings.

Earlier this month (May, 2019) the housing minister confirmed a £200m grant scheme to replace dangerous Grenfell Tower style cladding. The scheme offers to fully fund the replacement of unsafe aluminium composite material (ACM) cladding on privately owned high-rise residential properties.

However, Vivalda’s Peter Johnson is concerned that despite the publication of the Hackitt Report on safety and the subsequent ban on combustible cladding board, there is still a lack of joined up thinking regarding the specification and testing of new cladding systems.

Peter Johnson said: “While the new generation of non-flammable cladding products perform very well when fire tested (achieving A2 and above), we all know there is more to cladding than just the external face – facades comprise many layers including acoustic boards, thermal insulation, vital air voids and myriad fixing systems. Cladding is a much more complex topic than first meets the eye and thus deserves a truly holistic approach.”

“Specifiers working on high rise housing projects have been faced with an unpalatable challenge in the wake of Grenfell.

Construction to start at £1.5m Tower Gardens, Skegness

CONSTRUCTION work to breathe new life into Skegness’ much-loved Tower Gardens park is set to begin today (28 May).

Perfect Circle is delivering project management, cost management and health and safety services for the £1.5 million scheme in Skegness, Lincolnshire. The provision of these services has been procured via the Scape National Built Environment Consultancy Services (BECS) framework.

After standing derelict for 10 years, the Victorian park’s former Tower Gardens pavilion was demolished earlier this year to make way for a new community building in the centre of Skegness, comprising a community hall, cafe, community meeting area and changing places toilet.

The surrounding public realm is also being refreshed and treelined, opening up the area to the adjoining gardens, which include a children’s playground, ponds, green spaces and an entrance to the town centre.

Victoria Brambini, managing director at Perfect Circle – the consortium comprising Pick Everard, Gleeds and AECOM – said: “The now-demolished pavilion played a vital role in Skegness’ history and its growth as a seaside resort in the late 19th century. We are delighted to be involved in such a fantastic project that will regenerate the area, directly benefitting the Skegness community with new public spaces, and boosting the town’s tourism industry.

Over half of consumers want their houses to be built with sustainable features

Over half of consumers want their houses to be built with sustainable features

Over half of consumers believe it is important that their home is made using environmentally-responsible materials, according to research published by Eurocell plc, the UK’s leading manufacturer, distributor and recycler of PVC-U window, door, conservatory and roofline systems.

Furthermore, when asked about their preferred sustainability features, consumers identified double/triple glazing as the most appealing (58%), followed by solar panels (35%), energy efficient appliances (34%) and the use of recycled and sustainable building products (22%).

One of the key drivers behind this trend is the implementation of sustainability features by developers, which are regularly being incorporated into housebuilding voluntarily rather than as a result of legislation.

Explaining this trend, Steve Marshall, Architect Director and Head of Housing at BDP commented: “Some of our local authority clients like to be seen as leading the way and pushing standards when it comes to sustainability. They need to be seen to be doing the right thing and as such will go above and beyond minimum requirements. It might take time for this to impact the standards that others build to, but this may happen as buyers start to ask why the council is offering something that private developers are not.”

Whilst housing developers are pushing this trend currently, a group of architects presented with these statistics believe that consumer and tenant demand is likely to be a driver for sustainable development in the future.

With so many exhibitors showcasing their products and solutions at FIREX International 2019, it can sometimes be difficult to navigate the show floor and ensure you’re sourcing the right products for your fire safety strategy.

That’s what Fire Solutions, organised by Halma, seeks to remedy. This brand-new approach to exhibiting sees six leading suppliers of innovative fire safety technology from the same commercial family hosted at a single stand – the largest in the event’s 46-year history. The largest, in fact, across 4 co-located shows FIREX International, IFSEC International, Safety & Health Expo and the Facilities Show.

The six exhibitors featured at Fire Solutions are:

Advanced –demonstrating innovative multiprotocol, UL and EN54 approved systems, emergency light testing, and introducing our first cloud-connected panel and complete solution for remote management of the fire system

Apollo Fire Detectors – Offering innovative detection technology, audio visual systems, manual call points and more

Argus Security – high performance wireless fire detection sensors and systems
FFE UK – displaying their Fireray and Talentum products that offer new ways to detect smoke and fire

Klaxon – showcasing their Sonos Pulse range of beacons and visual alarm devices

LAN Control Systems – showcasing their NEW cloud-based, fire alarm management system NIMBUS

Each company will have its own dedicated display area within the stand, which has been designed to provide a one-stop-shop for customers, allowing them to move seamlessly between each one.

Highlife hits the high notes

Highlife hits the high notes

Highlife Bathrooms has enjoyed one of its most successful ever starts to a year, following its £100,000 rebranding from Alliance Sanitary Products in February.

The East Kilbride-based company, which serves both trade and retail customers across the UK, has reported a leap in sales; with a number of key customers significantly increasing their commitment to the brand. In addition, several lapsed customers have been added to the Highlife fold, along with a dozen new accounts.

Chris Edwards, a director of Bristol-based MPH, said: “Over the last couple of years our business has moved into showrooms; and so we now need to stock and display aspirational products that match the requirements of our expanding and changing customer base.

“As such, the Highlife rebranding couldn’t have come at a better time. Its products are outstanding, its customer service unparalleled, and its new branding really puts Highlife Bathrooms on a par with many of the leading brands.”

Meanwhile, John Houston, plumbing and heating category manager of Leeds-based Howarth Timber, added: “We’re a growing business, with a branch network of 32, and an attitude towards acquisition that means this number is likely to continue growing.”

“What makes Highlife stand out is the size of its stock holding, which allows it to offer swift delivery on virtually every product it sells.

Shhh, the heat pump revolution is coming

As heat pumps become more common as the primary source of heating for UK homes, Max Halliwell explores why it’s not just performance you need to look at.

The government has recognised how important air source heat pumps will be for the future of low carbon heating in the UK and is forecasting one million sales a year by 2030.

At the same time a recent report from the Committee on Climate Change called ‘UK housing: Fit for the future?’ is demanding that from 2025, new homes should not be connected to the gas grid, with gas boilers being banned in all new-build within the next six years.

One of the key areas that will affect adoption of renewable, energy-saving air source heat pumps though is noise, to ensure neighbours aren’t disturbed, which is why permitted development exists. In the residential environment, sound is important because low sound increases the flexibility of where a heat pump can be positioned.

Award-winning

Permitted Development requires sound levels to meet certain limitations, with the sound pressure level not exceeding 42 decibels, dB(A) when measured at a point one metre away from the neighbour’s nearest door or window.

Britcon completes Phase Two of refurbishment on historic Hirst Priory wedding venue

Britcon has completed a £320,000 contract as part of continued investment to refurbish Hirst Priory, an 18th century Priory and popular events venue in North Lincolnshire.

Hirst Priory, located adjacent to Jn2 M180, on the Isle of Axholme, is a Grade II listed mansion house nestling in a secluded setting overlooking the Lincolnshire Golf Course, and boasting 14 acres of stunning grounds.  Once a private residence it became neglected before being acquired by Hunt Group in 2004.

During 2015 Britcon undertook the first £250,000 phase transforming the Grade II listed building into a prestige venue for weddings and corporate events with a capacity of 120 people.  Externally, Britcon created extensive gravelled and lawn areas including woodland settings to host marquee functions and outdoor ceremonies for up to 300 guests.

In this latest phase Britcon have refurbished all seven bedrooms, restoring original period features and introducing en-suite facilities. The kitchen has been fully re-fitted, introducing more high-tech catering facilities for larger functions.  A new ‘Vaults’ area has been transformed to provide a subterranean 40-seater dining area and bar.  Hunt Group added a further investment of £30,000 on soft luxury interiors and other equipment.

Andy Toyne at Britcon said, “Hirst Priory is of considerable heritage value to the Isle and is cherished for its beautiful period architecture.

It’s time to recognise air pollution as an occupational health hazard

It’s time to recognise air pollution as an occupational health hazard

British Safety Council’s report makes the case for urgent action on the impact of air pollution on outdoor workers

The British Safety Council has launched a report ‘Impact of air pollution on the health of outdoor workers’ which provides compelling evidence to recognize ambient air pollution as an occupational health hazard in Britain. In the report, the charity presents the demands that spearhead its campaign to limit the dangers of air pollution to the health of outdoor workers.

Air pollution, linked with up to 36,000 early deaths a year in the UK, is considered the biggest environmental risk to public health. Research from King’s College London suggests that more than 9,400 people die prematurely due to poor air quality in London alone. Ambient air pollution is linked to cancer, lung and heart disease, type-2 diabetes, infertility and early dementia.

Several pilot schemes are beginning to monitor and measure the levels of air pollution experienced by people working and living in London. Their findings will be instrumental in developing recommendations for reducing people’s exposure to air pollution in the capital.

However, at the same time, the government and regulatory bodies such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), continue to demonstrate a lack of interest in relation to regulation and guidance on air pollution.

Construction begins on £12.5 million village outside Stonehaven

Construction begins on £12.5 million village outside Stonehaven

Construction has begun on 91 homes at Mackie Village on Ury Estate, by FMR Construction for Hillcrest Housing Association.

Local stakeholders including Andrew Bowie MP, Cllr Sarah Dickinson and Cllr Sandy Wallace joined Andrew Rae from FM Construction and Angela Linton, Hillcrest Housing Association Chief Executive, to break ground at the Stonehaven site.

Members of Stonehaven and District Community Council were also in attendance.

FMR Construction, part of the FM Group, will deliver high-quality housing for this bespoke village, which is on the 1,600 acre Ury Estate. The £12.5 million development was approved at committee in January this year.

The Mackie Village site is located next to the new Stonehaven retail outlet, which has seen construction recently start for a new 3,750 square metre supermarket.

The Estate development has historic mid-nineteenth century B-listed Ury House as its centrepiece. This is a key component of an £80 million golf resort featuring a course to be designed by legendary US golfer Jack Nicklaus, a restaurant and high-quality housing.

FMR Construction is involved in a raft of other construction projects, including a £14m construction contract to convert the Scottish Power headquarters in Glasgow, Cathcart House, into residential accommodation.
