Vent-Axia helps create an oasis of calm in London
Vent-Axia’s Sentinel Kinetic High Flow Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) units have helped create a relaxing and comfortable environment at a new floatation centre in Battersea. The Yue Float Centre is a Wellness Therapy Centre, incorporating floatation, infra-red sauna and Ajna Light treatment, and the MVHR units will provide quiet, energy efficient and effective ventilation throughout the centre.
The centre has three areas – Reception, Therapy and Utility – with the ventilation zoned accordingly, each with a designated Sentinel Kinetic High Flow MVHR unit. The system was designed and installed by Built Environment Technology Ltd with the three units suspended from the concrete slab ceiling on Unistrut cradles. Installation of the system took place in December 2017 and the centre opened in February 2018.
Ideal for light commercial applications such as the Yue Float Centre and larger homes, the energy efficient Sentinel Kinetic High Flow MVHR offers a whole building heat recovery system combining supply and extract ventilation in one unit. Warm, moist air is extracted from ‘wet’ rooms through ducting and passed through the heat exchanger before being exhausted outside and fresh incoming air is preheated via the integral heat exchanger. The unit can extract from up to fourteen wet rooms and a communal kitchen while still achieving almost 90% heat recovery. It has two fully adjustable speeds and a purge setting and its energy saving Vent-Axia DC motors further improves efficiency and carbon reductions.
“Efficiency, silence and comfort were all essential drivers in the specification of MVHR for the float centre” explains Tim Allan, the founder of Yue Float. “We are creating a calm oasis where our clients can relax and unwind so it is paramount that the environment we provide is healthy and controllable with no distracting and annoying noises. The Sentinel Kinetic High Flow offers all these things and will help us provide a sanctuary of serenity for mind, body and soul.”
“Ensuring quiet operation was key to this project so we generated a technical PDF for each unit to demonstrate the likely energy and acoustic impact. In addition, both primary and secondary duct attenuation was specified to ensure inaudible ventilation in all areas” explains Richard Porteous, Senior Projects Manager at Built Environment Technology Ltd who designed the system. “It was also important to meet the performance guidelines of CIBSE of an airflow of 300l/s throughout which the Sentinel Kinetic High Flow units were able to provide.”
Efficiency, quiet operation and high performance were all key features required by the Yue Float Centre and the Sentinel Kinetic High Flow provides all three. The unit benefits from the latest high efficiency, backward curved impeller design, ensuring the lowest possible energy consumption, ultra quiet operation and an exceptional performance range covering small one bed apartments to the largest of houses. Recognised in SAP PCDB, the lightweight MVHR unit is simple to install with a horizontal duct option for space-saving installations and a unique folding filter for removal when access is restricted. The models can be mounted vertically in a roof space or on a suitable wall and ducting can be attached to the unit horizontally, vertically or both. Left or right-hand installation further adds to its installation flexibility.
The Yue Float Centre is set to benefit from the Kinetic’s BMS capability which will allow the property manager to monitor and optimise the centre’s performance and maintenance. The Kinetic BMS will also provide them with status information and its self diagnostics will provide a report if any fault is found. The units feature plug and play control options and an integrated digital controller provides simple and accurate commissioning. The integral humidity sensor increases speed in proportion to relative humidity levels, saving energy and reducing noise. The sensor also reacts to small but rapid increases in humidity, even if the normal trigger threshold is not reached. This unique feature ensures adequate ventilation, even for the smallest wet room.
The Kinetic Range is also fitted with a digitally-controlled Summer Bypass, which allows an internal target comfort temperature to be set, along with an external threshold temperature. The Summer Bypass operates in Normal, Evening Purge or Night Purge modes, thus allowing the Yue Float Centre to select the most suitable and effective passive cooling periods.
