Bath’s Forest of Imagination wins top award for temporary landscape

Forest of Imagination, the Bath based pop-up contemporary arts event, has been crowned best Temporary Landscape at the 2018 Landscape Institute (LI) Awards.  

Created by landscape architect Grant Associates and arts charity 5x5x5=creativity, the annual four-day festival has seen different spaces in, and around, Bath transformed into fantastical ‘forests’ for the last five years.

 

Staged in partnership with a host of local creative businesses and artists, Forest of Imagination aims to heighten people’s sense of nature in urban environments by reimagining familiar spaces.

The event uses playful sound installations, visual art trails and ‘hands on’ workshops to encourage people of all ages to connect with nature and their own creativity.

Announcing Forest of Imagination as winner of ‘Design for a Temporary Landscape’, judges for the LI Awards said the event demonstrated ‘the potential of landscape architecture to be a social catalyst’.

The judges also said Forest of Imagination had a ‘high impact on Bath in terms of increasing visitor numbers, collaborators and funding’.

Forest of Imagination has been held each year in the Bath area since 2014 in a variety of locations including Bath Spa University, Queen Square, Bath Abbey and Abbey Green, and Bushey Norwood – part of Bath’s National Trust Skyline Walk.

Cavity Trays of Yeovil is the longest-established specialist in its field, and importantly is the only UK cavity tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval.

The Company is releasing a new technical handbook that contains more information and more problem-solving products than any previous publication.

Volume 28 bears the appropriate title: ‘Protecting the Building Envelope’ and contains approved national and international best practice build detail.

The official publication date is January 2019, but early release copies are being made available now, upon request.

Containing 190 pages, this latest publication addresses construction details from ground to rooftop, and lists new products and solutions including the Protective Adjustable Threshold that recently won the Housebuilder/HBF/NHBC award for Best New Building Product of 2018.

Cavity Trays approved products are accompanied with a performance warranty for the benefit of Architect, Builder and Client.

During the past three years the Yeovil-based Company has expanded its research and development department that for many decades has operated a national survey of building envelope problems and weaknesses, identifying where changes can be beneficial.

As the five-storey, 7,500 square metre Barbara Hepworth Building takes shape, the University was pleased to welcome Morgan Sindall’s MD for Construction Pat Boyle and Dr Sophie Bowness, granddaughter of Wakefield sculptor Barbara Hepworth, to the ‘topping out’ ceremony

CONSTRUCTION of the University of Huddersfield’s new £30 million centre for the study of art, design and architecture is months ahead of schedule, and it has witnessed an unusual “topping out” ceremony conducted by the granddaughter of Dame Barbara Hepworth, the famous artist who has given the building its name, in the presence of the main contractor’s MD for Construction.

Dr Sophie Bowness – who is an art historian and a trustee of the world-famous Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield – was invited to turn a bolt on one of the 146 aluminium panels that will be fixed to the glazed walls of the new building. Their function will be to reduce solar glare, but architects AHR have ensured that they are also an artistic adornment.

One of the great sculptors of the 20th century, Barbara Hepworth, who lived from 1903 to 1975, was born and educated in Wakefield. She was the first choice to be commemorated by the new University of Huddersfield building and at the topping out ceremony Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan thanked Dr Bowness for giving permission to use her grandmother’s name.

There seems to be much confusion recently re the use of assessments in fire door certification and Ahmarra would like to clarify our position and hopefully pass on our knowledge of the systems in place.

Primary Evidence vs Assessments

We strongly believe that both methods should remain a valid route to fire door certification but that more controls need to be in place to ensure that manufacturing and installation exactly match the requirements of either the primary tests and/or global assessments.

What is Primary Test Evidence

Primary evidence derives from a fire test by a named manufacturer at a UKAS laboratory. Test reports are statements of fact and therefore only apply to exactly what has been tested – no more and no less.

What are Assessments

Assessments are to be written by qualified fire consultants. Assessments are statements of expert opinion based on observed test performance. They allow both engineering expertise and the experience accumulated from other tests to be added to the facts of a particular test. There are two basic types of assessment: Global Assessments and Job Specific Assessments.

Global Assessments

Once the primary tests have been completed successfully, the test house will write a Global Assessment report that will bring together the test data into a single document which will explain the full scope of the product.

Mitsubishi Electric has added new 150kW and 180kW modules to its existing advanced range of high efficiency, inverter-driven, e-series modular chillers to expand the ‘off-the-shelf’ offering to the UK market.

The e-series offers market-leading low noise levels and exceptional part-load efficiencies with an operating range between 8-100% capacity to provide controllable, energy efficient cooling and heating with reduced plant size and a host of advanced features and benefits taken straight from the company’s experience in the air conditioning industry.

Available as cooling-only or heat pump versions, the new modules included a unique Y-shaped design to increase the intake of air and offer a greater heat exchanger surface area, delivering a highly efficient operation. With four inverter compressors operating as two pairs in each module and the ability to connect up to 6 individual modules into one system, the e-series chillers provide the perfect solution.

“We’ve had significant interest in these modular units since we launched the e-series three years ago and these larger modules expand the number of applications and buildings that can benefit from these advanced chillers” explains Graham Temple, Marketing Manager.

The new units have an even smaller footprint than the existing 90kW e-series modules and each slim unit can be positioned in a bank of up to six connected units using the same internal header, saving on piping space and equipment costs.

Kee Walk® is suitable for use on flat, barrel and sloping roofs.  The system’s step and traverse options allow access to be created for virtually any roof configuration from 0 to 35°.

Kee Walk® can be either free standing or fixed to the roof covering and is designed with open tread to ensure that water drains away effectively. Each tread is manufactured in high grade glass reinforced nylon with enhanced slip resistance for adverse weather conditions.  The walkway’s modular design uses standard pre-assembled 1.5 and 3m lengths and standard stair treads of 625mm long by 225mm wide. Vent-Axia delivers ventilation solution to impressive basement refurbishment project

Leading British fan manufacturer Vent-Axia has supplied two Sentinel Multivent H central extract units to a refurbished tenement property in Edinburgh New Town. The former basement store has been redeveloped and extended to create a luxury 5-bedroom home and has been named as one of the ‘100 best homes in Scotland since 2000’ according to the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

The project, led by Capital A Architecture, involved an extensive redesign and extension that created a more open plan living area, split over two levels. The rear garden is steep and the re-designed garden room has a lowered floor level to connect to the garden with as few steps as possible. The 7-month build included installation of Vent-Axia’s Sentinel Multivent H continuous mechanical extract ventilation (MEV) units which provided ventilation to the kitchen, bathroom and three en-suite areas.

Níall Hedderman, Director at Capital A Architecture designed the project and was involved throughout the construction phase. As a listed building, ventilation specification had to be considered carefully to minimise alterations to the building’s structure. Níall Hedderman explains: “The Vent-Axia Multivent was specified since it minimised the number of penetrations on the external wall, a serious consideration for alterations to a listed building.”

A continuous running MEV system, the Sentinel Multivent H was ideal for the project since its integral humidity sensor is designed for the simultaneous ventilation of separate areas in the home.

ISLAND Road West, a new prime urban logistics scheme in Reading, has seen the second phase of development completed this month on a former domestic landfill site off the A33.

Providing civil and structural engineering designs, BE Design has delivered a five-unit, industrial scheme over two phases, transforming a site which features domestic landfill with a depth of six metres. More than 34,160 sq ft has been delivered across two phases, with a global logistics firm pre-letting one of the units delivered in the second phase.

Director at the engineering and architecture practice BE Design, Stephen Oakden said: “There is a real demand for space to build residential and commercials schemes, and that is only on the increase. Developing on greenbelt land can be somewhat contentious, so we are seeing more and more former landfill sites and brownfield land around the UK being earmarked for redevelopment – meeting the demand and protecting greenbelt land at the same time.

“This move towards sustainable regeneration means that sites, such as Island Road West, now provide businesses with the real potential to turn dead-end land into usable – and profitable – space.”

First phase completed in 2017, with the second phase starting on site in 2018.

Over the centuries, zinc has proven to be a reliable, durable, corrosion-resistant and attractive metal for use in roofing and cladding. In this article, Marta Danylenko, marketing manager at materials search engine Matmatch explains the history, applications and benefits of using zinc in architectural applications, particularly for roofing and cladding.

The mineral zinc occurs naturally in soil, ore, air and water. In addition to being an abundant and important non-ferrous mineral, it is also essential to daily life and promotes organ and immune system development. Asia, Australia and America are the continents from which most of the world’s zinc supply is mined.

Thirty per cent of the total international zinc supply is recycled. The remaining 70 per cent is the result of extractive metallurgy. Zinc is typically extracted as a by-product of copper, lead and/or iron, most often from deposits of sulfidic ore.

After grinding ore into a fine powder, it is subjected to froth flotation and the resulting concentrate of zinc sulphide ore is roasted. Pyrometallurgy or electrowinning follows the roasting process. The amount of energy required to produce zinc from ore is around 50 per cent of that required for copper and steel, and around 25 per cent of the energy required to produce aluminium.

After visiting the new Mitsubishi Electric office space in London Bridge, Ellina Webb looks at the sustainable construction options that are ideal for flexible working and meeting spaces.

A few weeks ago my colleague Martin Fahey spoke about our new London office located in Sustainable Bankside. This new workspace is more than just your average office though, the community is built up of 75% sustainable start-ups and 25% corporates creating an eco-corporate culture of hipster heaven.

Of the many interesting elements of the working space – which includes up cycled office furniture, filament bulbs, succulents and sofas, what stood out to me the most were the sheds!

Wooden garden sheds are located outside the building in a communal open-air space which is lined with AstroTurf, ping pong tables and an amazing wooden home that featured on Grand Designs. The sheds however aren’t there to serve their traditional purpose, they act as additional meeting rooms adorned with comfy chairs and a table – the perfect location for a meeting of about 6 people.

Quirky spaces have become popular over the past few years as more and more people look to up cycling traditional objects like double decker buses and water towers into eco and sustainable living spaces.

Kemper System has helped to refurbish the Museum of Liverpool, completing a complex waterproofing project, which made the final of the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) Awards 2018.

Positioned over the Leeds Liverpool canal link, the museum required remedial works, which involved removing the original terrace steps and the failed single ply waterproofing of two separate terraces.

Once the original steps and terrace structure had been removed, Kemper System’s solvent-free Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing system was used by specialist contractors K Pendlebury & Sons to waterproof the original concrete slab underneath.

A complex steel support system was then bolted through the new waterproofed concrete slab. Further waterproofing was required comprising very specific detailing, including 672m of galvanised steel stepped beams with approximately 200 small individual supports and more than 3,600 individual bolt heads securing the steel to the slab.

Neilan Symondson from K Pendlebury said: “This was an extremely intricate job which had to be carried out in challenging weather conditions as the building is located on the waterfront. The Kemperol 2K-PUR was applied on slopes ranging from 20 to 35 degrees with very complex detailing.

“As Kemperol 2K-PUR is applied wet-on-wet this made it much easier for us to work around the extensive structural detailing and awkward shapes, ensuring they were waterproofed effectively.

How BSD met grade II* listed challenges to create £1.8M boutique hotel

A SUITE overlooking cathedral gardens, original fireplaces and character windows are just some of the features included in a new £1.8m boutique hotel in a historic location in Leicester.

Two empty office buildings in Peacock Lane and New Street – adjacent to the site of the car park where King Richard III’s remains were discovered – have been converted into the 28-bedroomed St Martins Lodge, which opened in October.

Building Services Design (BSD) provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the Grade II* listed Georgian buildings, with many of the original features being retained – including the hallway, with its chandelier and staircase.

Joel Sawyer, director at BSD, the lead designer on the project, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in a project that has created modern, elegant accommodation while at the same time, honouring the heritage of the important site and its surroundings.”

As 40% of the hotel – located directly opposite Leicester Cathedral – is of listed status, all original internal cornices, ceilings and floors are having to be retained, meaning BSD had to design the building services around the structure of the existing building.

Joel said: “We provided a design that is a mix of traditional and modern installation, meaning some of the building services run through the floors and into the ceiling.

How BSD met grade II* listed challenges to create £1.8M boutique hotel

A SUITE overlooking cathedral gardens, original fireplaces and character windows are just some of the features included in a new £1.8m boutique hotel in a historic location in Leicester.

Two empty office buildings in Peacock Lane and New Street – adjacent to the site of the car park where King Richard III’s remains were discovered – have been converted into the 28-bedroomed St Martins Lodge, which opened in October.

Building Services Design (BSD) provided mechanical and electrical engineering services for the Grade II* listed Georgian buildings, with many of the original features being retained – including the hallway, with its chandelier and staircase.

Joel Sawyer, director at BSD, the lead designer on the project, said: “We’re delighted to be involved in a project that has created modern, elegant accommodation while at the same time, honouring the heritage of the important site and its surroundings.”

As 40% of the hotel – located directly opposite Leicester Cathedral – is of listed status, all original internal cornices, ceilings and floors are having to be retained, meaning BSD had to design the building services around the structure of the existing building.

Joel said: “We provided a design that is a mix of traditional and modern installation, meaning some of the building services run through the floors and into the ceiling.

Pick Everard to deliver most ambitious project in school’s 516-year history

WORK has started to deliver state-of-the-art facilities as part of a new £60 million development for the King’s School – one of the largest independent day schools in the UK.

Pick Everard – the independent property, construction and infrastructure consultancy – is providing full design and engineering services for the 80-acre, Derby Fields development in Macclesfield, which is expected to be completed in May 2020.

The school’s current three sites will be united into one area, creating a new 16,000m2 academic building with 350 rooms, in addition to a new sports centre – which will include: a six lane, 25m swimming pool; a six-court sports hall and a dedicated indoor cricket centre. Externally, five new rugby pitches, one rounders field, two AstroTurf hockey pitches and six netball courts will be created.

Duncan Green, managing partner at Pick Everard said: “We are delighted to be working on such a major project for both the King’s School and Macclesfield as a town. We’ve been working with the school consolidating its estate onto a single site with brand new buildings so we’re pleased that work has now begun to realise this vision.”

Natalie Clemson, associate director said: “As well as including fantastic educational and sporting facilities, the new building will be highly energy efficient and sustainable with a BREEAM rating of ‘very good’.

Yorkshire construction services business, Harris CM is toasting success after its involvement with three separate brewery expansion projects at sites in the North West and Wales.

The Pontefract based firm has transformed a vacant building on Pacific Road in Cardiff, into a new state of the art production plant as part of a £2m contract for longstanding Cardiff based brewing company Brains. The facility will also include new offices and a reception area.

In Hulme near Manchester, Harris has completed a £1.5m project for Europe’s largest brewer, Heineken UK Limited, where it erected a supporting structure to support six giant fermenting vessels.

These are amongst the largest in the world, and each one has a capacity of 450,000 litres, or more than 790,000 pints. It’s now the first brewery outside Holland to brew Heineken and is also the UK base for Kronenbourg 1664.

Harris has also undertaken work on an additional £500,000 contract to extend the site’s Yeast Building, which sits in a restricted area immediately adjacent to the brewery process plant.

In addition, the company has completed a contract for the construction works for the installation of four additional dual-purpose vessels at Molson Coors’ Burtonwood Brewery in Warrington that will be used to support the production of the brewery’s Blue Moon brand.
