Leading British ventilation manufacturer Vent-Axia is delighted to welcome the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Healthy Homes and Buildings’ White Paper Building our Future: Laying the Foundations for Healthy Homes and Buildings, published on 24 October 2018. The White Paper makes clear recommendations to the Government on how it can improve standards in housing to benefit occupants’ health and wellbeing. This follows on from the APPG’s green paper published last year which set out the political, economic and business case for healthy homes and buildings.

The White Paper details how, as a nation, healthy homes and buildings can and should be delivered. These fall under three overarching recommendations.

* The Government needs to establish a cross-departmental committee for health and buildings to champion change; recognising the interaction between buildings, health, education and the economy.

* To grow the research and evidence base to develop a clear case for further Government action to improve new build standards.

* To make renovation of current housing stock and infrastructure a Government priority and develop plans for retrofitting that takes a holistic approach to maximising health and wellbeing.

Within these recommendations to help overcome the problem of unhealthy homes the White Paper calls for better and consistent building standards and regulations.

Whilst there’s no such thing as a typical building, are there standard control strategies that can be adopted for open plan offices? Controls expert Scott McGavin investigates.

I’ve had conversations with customers asking for the best, single controls strategy to adopt for an open plan office but the challenge here is that no one building is the same as any other and the use of energy within even apparently identical buildings will differ depending on the occupants and usage.

So open plan offices can provide one of the most challenging of environments to get right, not only do you have different ages and sexes, you can also have occasions where the office is half empty or crammed to bursting, which places different demands on the HVAC equipment.

Temperature may not be the only thing you need to check as without effective ventilation, any room can quickly become stuffy and stale.

Basic things to focus on

There are however, basic rules that you can follow to ensure you are maximising occupant comfort whilst minimising energy use.

The first thing to look at is the actual physical controls.  How many do you have in the space and are they competing against each other?

James Latham recently supplied performance timber fire door specialist Ahmarra Door Solutions with a number of Moralt FireSound 44dB and Halspan FD30 and FD60 Optima door cores, which have been used in the £7m extension to Fareham Innovation Centre.

Ahmarra manufactured over 100 bespoke laminate-faced fire doors to the customers’ specific requirements including specialist acoustic doors.

All doors were supplied and installed under the Q-Mark Fire Door Manufacturer and Fire Door Installer Schemes, which ensures a fully compliant and third-party certified product.

James Latham Door Champion, David Green, who is based at the company’s Fareham depot, commented, “We are delighted to have worked with Ahmarra on this specification. This is a really impressive project and one which demanded the highest quality and most technically superior products to be delivered and installed both on time and on budget.

“The Moralt FireSound 44mm door blank has been extensively tested in the UK and boasts an acoustic value of dB40 and a fire rating of FD30, making it one of the ‘best-in-class’ performance door blank products available on the market.

“Made from 3-layer particle board designed specifically for the fabrication of interior solid core doors, Halspan Optima offers both 30 and 60-minute fire-rating and is one of our most popular door cores and is regularly specified in the education, healthcare, hospitality, commercial, residential, retail and government sectors.”

The project has been developed and funded by Fareham Borough Council and supported by £2m funding from Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) from HM Government’s Local Growth Fund.

Cavity wall (contaminated land) gas barriers usually rise not less than 150mm in the cavity and often have to rise considerably more as they rely on support by being built into the inner skin – and coursing is rarely at the ideal height.

Cavity Trays of Yeovil – the only UK cavity tray manufacturer awarded European Technical Approval – has now made construction easier, by producing what is termed a Rise and Fall Barrier.

Rise and Fall Barriers are self-supporting and offer the convenience of starting and finishing at the same level. Rise and Fall Barriers support themselves, so seeking an inner skin mortar bed to hold the barrier to shape is not required.

Incorporated within the exterior cavity walls at ground floor level, Rise and Fall Barriers permit a more easily-managed build sequence and compact protective arrangement, and if the floor construction configuration requires the barrier to terminate at any intermediate or lower position, such levels are all possible.

Linking of barrier and oversite membrane is more straightforward.  Additionally, the option to have an extended barrier section projecting across the oversite permits horizontal lapping and sealing on the flat, considerably simplifying the build sequence programming.

National Ventilation’s Design Service Makes Ventilation a Breeze in Somerset home

National Ventilation, a leading UK-based ventilation manufacturer, has designed and supplied a whole house ventilation system to a two-storey home being built in Taunton, Somerset.

The project, consisting of a ground floor and first floor, was already well underway when National Ventilation was contacted and so required their free design expertise to work with the existing build.

National Ventilation worked with the owner and designer to create a system that would provide the correct levels of ventilation and physically work within the existing structure. A mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) unit was required to improve indoor air quality and reduce space heating costs. The Monsoon HRU/330-100 MVHR was selected to meet these requirements, as well as being able to work efficiently with the extra pressure created by using the existing underfloor pipework as the supply and extract pipe. Monsoon radial ducting was also specified as it offers simplified installation and on-site flexibility for any variations that arise in a project compared to design plans.

Lincs WW2 museum to educate next generation thanks to £40k energy saving

AN EDUCATIONAL museum in Lincolnshire showcasing historic memorabilia from both world wars is set to save more than £40,000 over the next 20 years, thanks to specialist renewable energy consultants Greenio.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on the roof of the ‘We’ll Meet Again’ museum, in Freiston, have future-proofed the registered charity, meaning thousands more schoolchildren will be able to learn about the fight for freedom and sacrifices made during the First and Second World War. The project, which completed following the museum’s first anniversary, will begin to offer savings of more than £2,000 a year.

The museum – which has a 14ft Lancaster bomber, army rationing items and objects from the Home Guard on display – was set up in 2017 by Paul Britchford, who started collecting the items from the age of eight and has since accumulated thousands of artefacts, some of which were used in the upcoming war film Lancaster Skies.

Paul and his wife, Linda, started as a travelling museum visiting schools across Lincolnshire in an army truck. In 2016, the couple secured a £200,000 grant from the LIBOR Fund in recognition of their educational work with children and opened the static museum – which now welcomes at least two schools a week – a year later.

Coming back from the summer break with recharged batteries and a suitcase full of souvenirs and good intentions, September always seems to do its best to challenge this with a tsunami of shows. For myself and my colleagues at Quarterre, a transport and product design studio based in London, this has centred around two things this year: The London Design Festival, when the world and its soft furnishings comes to our doorstep and the Paris Motor Show, a veritable Grande Dame of the automotive industry whose glory days might be behind her now but who still knows how to put on a class act. These two great events, much like their host cities, are, at first glance, quite different. However, in a reflection of the times we live in perhaps, these superficial differences mask important themes and knowledge that, when shared, can benefit all.

The London Design Festival often seems to contain a bustling multitude of ideas both laudable and laughable and this year was no different. Amidst the colours, curves and visual puns were thought-provoking investigations into positive uses of personal data in urban planning (Zaha Hadid), sustainable structures from responsibly sourced materials (MultiPly by Waugh Thistleton Architects) and the innovative use of waste materials in product design (Ilse Crawford, as part of the Viaduct Common Senses show), proof that creativity will be key in solving these recurring questions of cities, sustainability and circular economics.

James Latham recently supplied 5m3 of super prime grade Walnut to one of their customers who have used it to create some spectacular doors as well as privacy screening for an outstanding, high-specification residential property in Lancashire.

The project has seen twenty-three 2.7m high doors manufactured and installed by specialist bespoke handcrafted joinery company, Woodside Designs of Blackpool.

Eleven of the doors are handle-less, incorporating grooves for handles, plus there are also 3D-hinges, and drop-down seals as well as top-end Swiss and German ironmongery throughout.
In addition, a breath-taking, ‘living’ privacy screen has been created and framed in super prime Walnut which features lush foliage and dense greenery, invoking an instant calm and tranquil atmosphere whilst simultaneously cleansing the air of toxins.

Carl Hulme, Timber Sales Representative for James Latham Leeds, who supplied the timber commented, “This project is simply stunning. The doors look amazing and the living privacy screen makes a real statement with the abundant greenery offering a stark contrast to the clean white walls.

“The colour of super prime solid Walnut boasts a unique earthy brown hue which varies between cinnamon and chocolate and it also finishes beautifully, giving an excellent decorative appearance due to its distinctive grain, colour and pattern.

Stoic Brit self-builders and home renovators defy Brexit uncertainty

While business leaders across the UK are putting off major decisions as they sail the ‘We’ll See’ of Brexit, Britain’s growing army of self-builders and home renovators are remaining completely unfazed by the biggest political story in decades, preferring to adopt a ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ mindset.

As a result, industry sectors including doors and windows; drainage; roofing and cladding; security; lighting; plumbing and heating; kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms; planning permission; renewable technologies; energy efficiency, and home insurance can expect to reap the benefits of this buoyant and burgeoning market.

According to a recent survey of around 2,400 homeowners, carried out by the market-leading Homebuilding & Renovating Shows, 86 per cent said they are continuing with their project.

78 per cent of respondents said that there would be no change in their level of project spend.  Additionally, there was no indication that homeowners had changed their minds on product choice or scale of project.

The majority of survey respondents from the recent London Homebuilding & Renovating Show at ExCeL stated that they remained determined to continue with their projects including self-build/custom build, first time conversions, single and two-storey extensions, remodelling rooms and layouts, and creating new kitchens.

HS2 has revealed its vision for a new station at Curzon Street, Birmingham with a design by WSP, Grimshaw, Glenn Howells Architects and landscape architecture by Grant Associates.

The city centre station is one of two new stations planned by HS2 for the Midlands, the second will be in Solihull with a design team led by Arup.

Images of the two stations have been revealed this month at Birmingham Library in the first of a series of public engagement events during October, which give people the opportunity to see the new designs and give feedback.

Curzon Street Station will be the first brand new intercity station built in Britain since the 19th century, creating a new landmark for Birmingham and boosting opportunities for regeneration in the city.

Due to open in 2026, the new station will offer seven high speed platforms to rail passengers, along with significant new public spaces around the new station.

The station, which will be located next to the original 1838 Curzon Street Station, will be fully integrated into an extended tram network, as well as offering pedestrian, cycle, taxi, bus and conventional rail connections to the rest of the city and the wider West Midlands.

Yeovil-based Cavity Trays Ltd has developed a ready-to-use solution to eliminate a reoccurring construction problem when building on contaminated land. Originally conceived for Radon gas situations, it is called the Type PAT – Protective Adjustable Threshold.

Where gas barriers are present within the external cavity walls of a building and the door openings interrupt the arrangement, maintaining gas-tight integrity and damp-proofing measures is always difficult. Commonly door openings are at a different level (access requirements) and interrupt the protective arrangement against rising gas.

Using flexible DPC requires support from higher courses and creates a cumbersome arrangement in which achieving a gas and water-tight arrangement that links with threshold and closers is difficult.
The Type PAT eliminates this problem.

The new Protective Adjustable Threshold (Type PAT) from Cavity Trays provides both gas and water protection under and to the sides of every opening and does so in a way that eliminates discontinuity and provides adjustable connection with adjacent barriers.

The Type PAT – Protective Adjustable Threshold – is a three-dimensional DPC unit that is bedded within the external wall opening. Integration between wall barriers and the Type PAT is achieved using the adjustable side connectors that attach to the Type PAT and slide up and down to the requisite level.

Breathing Buildings, the UK’s leading provider of controlled hybrid ventilation systems, has welcomed the 2018 edition of BB101: Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools. Published recently by the Education and Skills Funding Agency, the document is aimed at technical professionals involved in the design, specification and construction of new school buildings and the refurbishment of existing buildings. This Building Bulletin sets out the regulatory framework for school ventilation giving recommended performance levels for compliance with UK regulations while also providing non-statutory guidance on ventilation, thermal comfort and indoor air quality in schools.

The BB101 2018 guidance has changed significantly since the previous BB101 published in 2006. Focusing on the vital balance of indoor air quality, thermal comfort and efficiency BB101 2018 sets more stringent air quality targets, is tougher on summertime overheating, and recommends a pre-mixing of air to eliminate cold draughts. Hybrid ventilation systems are also introduced in BB101 2018 alongside traditional natural and mechanical ventilation, offering specifiers an alternative ventilation design strategy for schools.

So, what are the top 5 things you need to know about R32?

There’s been a lot of talk about R32 in the air conditioning world over the past few years, but if you haven’t yet installed a piece of R32 kit, what’s it all about?

If you have fitted some of our M Series (RAC) and Mr Slim (PAC) equipment available, what do you do when it comes to VRF?

There’s a lot to get your head around whenever there is a change within our industry, especially when it concerns refrigerant, but we’ve managed to condense this all down to the 5 key things you really need to understand now.

1. Why the change? And why now?

It’s all to do with the global warming potential or GWP of the refrigerants used within air conditioning systems.

If 1 kg of R410A was leaked into the atmosphere, it is calculated to cause 2,088 times more damage than releasing 1kg of CO2.

We therefore need to move to refrigerants with lower GWPs and R32, the latest one to be introduced has a GWP of 675, so is about a third of the impact of R410A.
