Studying for a degree is an expensive business and rising tuition fees have heightened expectations amongst students, as well as the parents and carers who help fund their education. Students are no longer prepared to tolerate semi-derelict rental properties with shared showers; en-suite bathrooms, flatscreen TVs and leather sofas are now commonplace.

The same goes for campus environments. Excellent comfort conditions and a focus on wellbeing are ‘must haves’ and universities that fail to provide facilities of the highest standards are unlikely to attract students and the lecturers required to teach them.

This is entirely logical, as a stuffy and polluted study area makes it difficult to concentrate, and hard to remain alert and focused. Low air quality can reduce productivity through symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, aches and pains, and skin irritation. It can also exacerbate seasonal affective disorder (SAD), stress, depression, backache and other cardiovascular ailments.

Things ain’t what they used to be

As well as a healthy environment, students want information about which areas of a campus are hot or cold to suit their preferences and need to be able to navigate their way around via mobile technology. These are just a few of the reasons why using an Internet of Things (IoT) enabled Building Energy Management System (BEMS) can improve student productivity and engagement by acquiring, accessing and evaluating data from a variety of sources.
